Overview

What is income tax return filing?

An income tax return (ITR) is the form in which you report your income, deductions and taxes paid for a financial year to the Income Tax Department. Filing it on the e-filing portal settles your tax for the year, gets you any refund of extra TDS, and creates a record that banks, visa offices and lenders rely on.

Returns being filed now are for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27), covering income earned from April 2025 to March 2026. They are filed under the Income-tax Act, 1961, even though the new Income-tax Act, 2025 took effect on 1 April 2026. From FY 2026-27, the new Act uses a single "tax year" in place of the previous year and assessment year, and section numbers change.

The department already knows much of your financial life through the Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Form 26AS: salary, interest, dividends, share and mutual fund trades, property deals and high-value spending. A return that doesn't match this data leads to notices and lost refunds, so we reconcile everything before filing.

FAQs

Income tax return filing: frequently asked questions

What is the last date to file ITR for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27)?

31 July 2026 for individuals and HUFs without business income (ITR-1 and ITR-2), 31 August 2026 for business or professional income without audit (ITR-3 and ITR-4), and 31 October 2026 for tax audit cases, unless the CBDT extends these dates. If you missed your date, a belated return can be filed until 31 December 2026.

Can I still file my ITR after the due date?

Yes. A belated return under Section 139(4) can be filed until 31 December 2026 for FY 2025-26. A late fee applies, interest is charged on any unpaid tax, and some losses, such as capital and business losses, can't be carried forward.

What is the late fee for filing ITR after the due date?

Under Section 234F the late fee is ₹1,000 if your total income is up to ₹5 lakh and ₹5,000 above that. There is no late fee if your income is below the basic exemption limit. Interest at 1% a month under Section 234A is added on any tax still unpaid.

Who must file an income tax return?

Anyone whose total income before deductions is above the basic exemption limit must file. You must also file if you have foreign assets or income, deposited ₹1 crore or more in current accounts, spent over ₹2 lakh on foreign travel or ₹1 lakh on electricity in the year, or meet the TDS, turnover or savings-deposit thresholds in the rules.

Should I file ITR even if my income is below the taxable limit?

It's usually a good idea. Filing is the only way to claim a refund of TDS, carry forward losses, and build an income record for loans, visas and credit cards.

Which ITR form should I file?

ITR-1 for resident individuals with salary, house property and interest income up to ₹50 lakh; ITR-2 if you have capital gains, foreign assets or income above ₹50 lakh but no business; ITR-3 for business or professional income, including F&O trading; ITR-4 for presumptive income; and ITR-5, 6 and 7 for firms and LLPs, companies, and trusts. We confirm the right form for you.

Which is better, the old or the new tax regime?

The new regime has lower rates and no tax up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income, but allows few deductions. The old regime can work out better if you claim large deductions such as 80C, 80D, HRA and home loan interest. Use the calculator above to compare, and we'll check it on your actual figures.

Can I switch between the old and new tax regime?

Salaried individuals and others without business income can choose the regime every year while filing the return. Those with business or professional income can opt out of the new regime by filing Form 10-IEA by the due date, and can switch back only once.

Is income up to ₹12 lakh really tax-free?

Under the new regime, the Section 87A rebate of up to ₹60,000 means no tax if taxable income is up to ₹12 lakh; with the ₹75,000 standard deduction, salaried people pay no tax up to ₹12.75 lakh. The rebate doesn't cover special-rate income such as capital gains on shares, and you must still file a return.

What are AIS and Form 26AS, and why do they matter?

Form 26AS shows tax deducted or paid against your PAN. The Annual Information Statement (AIS) adds interest, dividends, share and mutual fund trades, property deals and more reported by banks and others. Your return should match them; mismatches are a common reason for notices.

How long does it take to get an income tax refund?

Once the return is e-verified, most refunds are processed within a few weeks, though some take longer. The refund goes to a pre-validated bank account linked to your PAN, and interest is paid on delayed refunds.

What is e-verification and is it mandatory?

Yes. A return is treated as filed only after it is verified, within 30 days of filing. You can e-verify instantly with an Aadhaar OTP, net banking or a pre-validated bank account, or send a signed ITR-V by post.

Can I correct a mistake after filing my ITR?

Yes. You can file a revised return under Section 139(5) up to 31 March 2027 for FY 2025-26, as long as the return hasn't been assessed. For mistakes found later, an updated return (ITR-U) may be possible.

What is an updated return (ITR-U)?

ITR-U lets you report income you missed or correct errors within 48 months from the end of the assessment year, by paying the tax plus an additional 25% to 70% of the tax and interest, depending on how late it is. It can't be used to claim a refund or reduce tax.

Do I need to report capital gains on shares and mutual funds?

Yes, every sale must be reported, even if the gain is exempt or you made a loss. Long-term gains on listed shares and equity funds above ₹1.25 lakh are taxed at 12.5% and short-term gains at 20%. Reporting losses lets you carry them forward for 8 years if you file on time.

How are F&O and intraday trading taxed?

F&O trading is treated as non-speculative business income and intraday equity trading as speculative business income, so ITR-3 is needed. Depending on turnover and profit, a tax audit may also apply. We work out turnover and audit applicability for you.

Do NRIs need to file an ITR in India?

Yes, if their Indian income, such as rent, interest or capital gains, is above the exemption limit, or to claim a refund of TDS, which is often deducted at higher rates for NRIs. NRIs usually file ITR-2 or ITR-3 and can claim treaty benefits with a Tax Residency Certificate.

Does the new Income-tax Act 2025 change how I file this year?

No. The Income-tax Act 2025 applies from 1 April 2026, so returns for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) are filed under the Income-tax Act 1961. Income from FY 2026-27, called tax year 2026-27, will be filed under the new Act next year.
