What is a virtual number?
A virtual number is a business phone number that isn't tied to a SIM card or a desk phone. It runs in the cloud, so calls to it can ring on any mobile or laptop, be answered by an IVR menu, be shared across your team, and be recorded and tracked, all from one dashboard.
Instead of giving customers a salesperson's personal number, you publish one business number on your website, ads, Google Business Profile and visiting cards. Calls are routed to whoever is free, follow your business hours, and go to voicemail or a missed-call alert when no one can answer. When staff change, the number stays with your business.
Virtual numbers are mainly for receiving calls and for calling your own customers back. Promotional calling to new people follows TRAI's separate rules for the 140 series, explained below.
Types of virtual numbers
| Type | Looks like | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile virtual number | A 10-digit mobile number | Sales and support lines, WhatsApp-style familiarity, all-India use |
| Landline (city) number | A city STD code, like 080 or 022 | Local presence in a city, offices and clinics |
| Toll-free number | 1800 series | Customer care where callers pay nothing; you pay for the minutes |
| 140 series | Starts with 140 | Promotional and telemarketing calls, after TRAI DLT registration |
| 1600 series | Starts with 1600 | Service calls by RBI, SEBI, IRDAI and PFRDA regulated entities and government |

What is a virtual number?+
A virtual number is a business phone number that runs in the cloud instead of on a SIM card. Calls to it can ring on your team's mobiles or laptops, be answered by an IVR, and be recorded and tracked from a dashboard.
How much does a virtual number cost?+
Our plans start at ₹999 a month + GST with 1,000 incoming minutes, an IVR and missed-call alerts. Toll-free numbers and higher-volume plans cost more.
Do I need a separate phone or SIM?+
No. Calls are forwarded to your existing mobiles or answered in the app or browser. There's no hardware to buy.
Can I choose my own number?+
Yes, from the numbers available. You can pick a 10-digit mobile number, a city landline number or a toll-free number, including easy-to-remember ones, subject to availability.
What is the difference between a virtual number and a toll-free number?+
A toll-free 1800 number is a type of virtual number where callers pay nothing and the business pays for the minutes. A regular virtual number costs callers a normal call.
Can several people answer the same number?+
Yes. Calls can ring agents one by one, all together or based on who is free, and you can set business hours, holidays and overflow rules.
Can I make outgoing calls from a virtual number?+
Yes, you can call customers back using click-to-call, and they see your business number. Promotional calls to new people must follow TRAI rules and use the 140 series.
What are 140 and 1600 series numbers?+
TRAI requires promotional calls from any sector to come from 140-series numbers, and service or transaction calls from banks, NBFCs, insurers, brokers, pension entities and government to come from 1600-series numbers.
Do I need a 1600 number?+
Only if you are a regulated financial entity (RBI, SEBI, IRDAI or PFRDA) or a government body making service or transaction calls. Other businesses can use virtual numbers for receiving calls and call-backs.
Can I record calls?+
Yes. Calls can be recorded and played back from the dashboard. It's good practice to play a short notice telling callers the call may be recorded.
What documents are needed?+
Business proof such as a GST or incorporation certificate, business PAN and address proof, plus photo ID and an authorisation letter for the authorised person, as required by telecom KYC rules.
How quickly can my number go live?+
Usually within 24 to 48 hours of completing KYC, including IVR and routing setup.
Can I use the number for WhatsApp?+
Some virtual numbers can be registered on the WhatsApp Business API. We can check this for your number and set up WhatsApp alongside calling.
Can I port my existing number?+
Mobile numbers can't be ported into a cloud virtual number in most cases, but you can forward your existing number to the virtual number, or use the virtual number as your main business line.
What happens to calls outside business hours?+
You can play an after-hours message, take a voicemail, forward to an on-call person, and send a missed-call alert so your team calls back the next morning.
Can I track calls from my ads?+
Yes. Use different virtual numbers for Google, Meta, print or hoardings, and the reports show which campaign brought each call.
Does it work with my CRM?+
Yes. Calls, recordings and missed calls can be pushed to common CRMs, Google Sheets or your own system through integrations and webhooks on higher plans.
Is there a contract?+
Plans are monthly, with yearly billing available. Numbers stay with you while your plan is active.
