What is MSME Udyam registration?
Udyam registration is the Government of India's official registration for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), under the MSMED Act, 2006. It gives your business a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate that banks, government buyers and large customers use to confirm you are an MSME.
Registration is self-declared, paperless and has no government fee. Your investment and turnover are taken from your income tax and GST records, and your category is worked out from them automatically.
Where businesses go wrong is in the details: the wrong activity (NIC) codes, a missing GSTIN, a mismatch between PAN and Aadhaar names, or registering a trader as a manufacturer. These mistakes can cost you a loan, a tender or your right to interest on late payments. We get them right before we file.
Who can register for Udyam?
Any business that makes goods or provides services and falls within the MSME limits, whatever its legal form.
Proprietors & freelancers
Registered on the proprietor's Aadhaar and PAN. GSTIN is needed only if your business must register for GST.
Partnerships & LLPs
Registered using the Aadhaar of the managing partner and the firm's or LLP's PAN.
Companies & OPCs
Private, public and one person companies, using an authorised director's Aadhaar and the company PAN.
Retail & wholesale traders
Can register, but only for priority sector lending. Other MSMED Act benefits, such as the 45-day payment rule, don't apply to trading.
Societies, trusts & cooperatives
Eligible if they carry on a manufacturing or service business and have a PAN.
Informal micro units
Units without PAN or GST can get a certificate through the Udyam Assist Platform, which counts as Udyam for priority lending.
Micro, small or medium? Check your MSME category
Using the limits in force from 1 April 2025. Your category is the higher of the two results, investment or turnover.
Investment is the written-down value of plant, machinery or equipment as per your last ITR, excluding land, building and furniture. 100 lakh = 1 crore.
Your MSME category
—
Guide only. Your final category on the Udyam portal is worked out from your ITR and GST data.
| Category | Investment up to | And turnover up to |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | ₹2.5 crore | ₹10 crore |
| Small | ₹25 crore | ₹100 crore |
| Medium | ₹125 crore | ₹500 crore |
Same limits for manufacturing and services. Export turnover is not counted. Before 1 April 2025 the limits were ₹1 / 10 / 50 crore investment and ₹5 / 50 / 250 crore turnover.

Government tenders
25% of central government purchases are reserved for micro and small enterprises, with EMD exemption and free tender documents.
Lower IP fees
Trademark filing fees for small enterprises are half the standard fee, and patent fees are also reduced.
Subsidies & schemes
Access to ZED certification support, state capital and interest subsidies, and electricity and stamp duty concessions in many states.
Invoice discounting
Sell unpaid invoices from large buyers on TReDS platforms to get cash early.
Credibility with buyers

Late payment protection for micro and small enterprises
Under the MSMED Act, buyers must pay you within the agreed credit period, up to 45 days, or within 15 days if there is no written agreement. After that, compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate is due, with monthly rests.
Interest your buyer owes you
—
Estimate only. The RBI bank rate changes over time; interest is worked out for each period at the rate notified for it. Applies to micro and small enterprises registered before the supply, not to traders.
- Income taxSection 43B(h): your buyer loses the deductionA buyer who pays a micro or small supplier after 45 days (or 15 without an agreement) can't claim that expense in the year until it is actually paid. Most buyers pay on time once they know.
- DisclosureCompanies must report MSME duesCompanies disclose amounts owed to MSMEs in their accounts, and larger buyers file half-yearly MSME Form I returns with the ROC for dues beyond 45 days.
- RecoveryMSME Samadhaan and the facilitation councilYou can file a delayed payment case online. The council attempts conciliation and then arbitration, and a buyer challenging an award must first deposit 75% of it.
Keeping your Udyam registration up to date
Udyam is a one-time registration, but the details must stay current.
- 1Annual update after ITR and GST filingEach year, investment and turnover are refreshed from your ITR and GST returns. Confirm the update on the portal so banks and buyers see current figures; outdated details can lead to your status being suspended.
- 2Change of categoryIf you grow past a limit, you move up a category. If you go down, you move down from the next financial year. After an upward move, non-tax benefits continue for 3 years.
- 3Change of detailsAddress, bank, NIC codes, units and employees can be edited online. A change of PAN, such as converting a proprietorship to a company, needs a fresh registration.
- 4Old Udyog Aadhaar (UAM)Udyog Aadhaar numbers are no longer valid. If you only have UAM, you need a new Udyam registration to keep MSME benefits.
- 5One registration per PANAll your units and GSTINs under the same PAN go into one Udyam registration. Duplicate registrations are not allowed and may be cancelled.
