Tamil Nadu's businesses range from the markets, IT firms, auto and electronics plants and port of Chennai, OMR, Sriperumbudur and Oragadam to Coimbatore's textile mills, pumps and foundries, Tiruppur's knitwear exporters, Karur's home textiles, Erode's textile market and turmeric, Hosur's auto and engineering units, the leather clusters of Ambur, Vaniyambadi and Ranipet, Sivakasi's fireworks and printing, BHEL and its ancillaries in Tiruchirappalli, the Thoothukudi port, tea in the Nilgiris, the rice of the Cauvery delta and temple tourism across the State. What is the GST registration limit for businesses in Tamil Nadu?

Tamil Nadu follows the normal limits: registration is compulsory once aggregate turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for businesses supplying only goods, or ₹20 lakh for services or mixed supplies. Sellers of goods to other States and e-commerce sellers of goods across States must register from the first sale.

Which documents are needed for GST registration in Tamil Nadu?

PAN and Aadhaar of the proprietor, partners or directors, a photograph, bank proof, and proof of your business address in Tamil Nadu: a recent TNPDCL electricity bill, the property tax receipt from the corporation, municipality or panchayat, or the patta and chitta from TN e-services for your own land, with the owner's consent if the property is in a family member's name. For rented premises, add the rent agreement.

What is the GST state code for Tamil Nadu?

33. Every GSTIN issued to a business registered in Tamil Nadu, including one in Tamil Nadu, starts with 33, followed by the PAN of the business.

How can I get a GST number in Tamil Nadu?

Share your PAN, Aadhaar, photo, address proof and bank details with us on WhatsApp. We file Form GST REG-01 online, you confirm an Aadhaar OTP, and the department issues your 15-digit GSTIN starting with 33 and the registration certificate.

Is the GST registration limit the same across Tamil Nadu?

Yes. The limits are the same in every district and taluk: ₹40 lakh for businesses selling only goods and ₹20 lakh for services or mixed supplies. Tamil Nadu is not one of the special category States that use lower limits.

Can I register GST from my home in Tamil Nadu?

Yes. Your house can be the principal place of business, with an electricity bill or property tax receipt, and a consent letter if the house is in a family member's name. Keep a small name board for any verification.

Can a small business in Tamil Nadu choose the composition scheme?

Yes. Traders and manufacturers in Tamil Nadu with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore can opt for composition and pay 1% of turnover (5% for restaurants), and service providers up to ₹50 lakh pay 6%. You can't collect GST from customers or claim input tax credit, and goods can't be sold to other States.

Is there profession tax in Tamil Nadu?

Yes. In Tamil Nadu, profession tax is collected half-yearly by the local body: the corporation, municipality or town or village panchayat where you work or run your business. Employers deduct it from salaries, and businesses and professionals pay it directly. It is separate from GST; we can help with both.

Can I sell on Amazon or Flipkart from Tamil Nadu without GST?

Only within Tamil Nadu. Small sellers supplying goods only within their own State can sell through marketplaces with an enrolment number instead of GST below the limit. To sell to buyers in other States through Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho, you need GST registration from the first sale.

I have an office in Tamil Nadu and another in Bengaluru or Puducherry. Is one GST registration enough?

No. GST registration is State-wise. Your Tamil Nadu premises are registered in Tamil Nadu (GSTIN starting 33); a Bengaluru office needs its own Karnataka registration (starting 29) and a Puducherry office another (starting 34), under the same PAN.

When are GST returns due for a business in Tamil Nadu?

Monthly filers submit GSTR-1 by the 11th and GSTR-3B by the 20th of the next month. Small taxpayers under the QRMP scheme in Tamil Nadu file GSTR-3B by the 22nd of the month after the quarter. Composition dealers file CMP-08 by the 18th after each quarter.

Do I need a trade licence along with GST in Tamil Nadu?

GST doesn't need one, but corporations, municipalities and town panchayats issue trade licences for shops in their towns, and shops and offices register under the Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishments Act, 1947. A trade licence is also useful supporting proof of your place of business.

Do factories, textile units and IT firms in Tamil Nadu need GST registration from the start?

Usually yes. Units in SIPCOT and SIDCO estates, auto and engineering suppliers, textile and leather exporters and IT firms selling to companies supply other businesses, so they need a GSTIN to give tax invoices, claim input tax credit and move goods with e-way bills. Exporters of goods or software file an LUT; we handle it with your registration.
