Quick answer
Google Ads usually underperform because of a few fixable problems: broad keywords without negatives, Display Network or Smart campaigns wasting budget, wrong location settings, a slow or unfocused landing page, broken conversion tracking, the wrong bidding strategy, and slow follow-up on calls and enquiries. Check the search terms report first; it shows exactly what you're paying for. Use the symptom table and the health check below to find your issue, fix one thing at a time and give each change 1–2 weeks.

12 reasons Google Ads don't work (and the fixes)
1. Using Smart campaigns or the wrong campaign type
What happens: Smart campaigns are easy but give little control over which searches trigger your ads. Some businesses also run Display campaigns when they need Search leads.
Fix: switch to Expert mode and run Search campaigns for lead generation. Use Display or YouTube only for remarketing and awareness.
2. Broad keywords and no negative keywords
What happens: your "CA services" ad shows for "CA course fees", "CA jobs" and "CA exam result". You pay for clicks that will never become customers.
Fix: open Insights & reports → Search terms, add irrelevant terms as negatives, and use phrase and exact match for core keywords. Add a starter list: free, jobs, salary, course, training, pdf, meaning, internship, DIY. More in our guide to getting leads from Google Ads.
3. Display Network and Search partners turned on
What happens: new Search campaigns often include the Display Network by default, showing your text ads on apps and websites where people click by accident.
Fix: in campaign settings, untick Display Network. Test Search partners separately and turn them off if they bring poor leads.
4. Wrong location settings
What happens: targeting all of India for a local service, or using "Presence or interest", which shows ads to people outside your area who are merely interested in it.
Fix: target only the cities, pin codes or radius you serve, and choose "Presence: people in or regularly in your targeted locations". Check the locations report for where clicks come from.
5. Budget spread too thin
What happens: a ₹300-a-day budget across 80 keywords and 5 services means each gets a handful of clicks, campaigns show "Limited by budget" and nothing learns.
Fix: focus on your 2–3 most profitable services and their best keywords first. Aim for at least 20–30 clicks a day per campaign. See Google Ads cost in India.
6. Low Quality Score and weak ads
What happens: generic ads ("Best services, contact us") and broad ad groups get low Quality Scores, which means higher costs and lower positions.
Fix: group keywords tightly by theme, put the keyword, city and price in headlines, add 10–15 headlines to responsive search ads, and add call, sitelink and callout assets. Make the landing page match the ad.
7. Landing page problems
What happens: clicks go to a home page that loads slowly on mobile, with no clear form, call button or WhatsApp button. Visitors leave.
Fix: use a focused landing page for each main service: the same headline as the ad, price or range, reviews, and a form, call and WhatsApp button visible without scrolling. Aim for under 3 seconds to load.
8. Broken or misleading conversion tracking
What happens: no conversions are tracked, or page views and button hovers are counted as conversions. Smart bidding then optimises for the wrong thing, and reports look better or worse than reality.
Fix: track only real actions (form submissions, calls from ads, clicks on phone numbers and WhatsApp links), set them as primary conversions, and test each one.
9. The wrong bidding strategy
What happens: using Target CPA with an unrealistically low target (ads barely show), or Maximise conversions with no conversion data (Google guesses).
Fix: start with Maximise clicks with a bid limit, or manual CPC, to collect data. Move to Maximise conversions once you have steady conversions, and only add a target CPA close to your real cost per lead.
10. Ads not showing: policy, billing or verification
What happens: ads are disapproved, the account is paused for a payment problem, advertiser verification isn't complete, or keywords have very low search volume.
Fix: check the Policy manager and ad status, fix billing, complete verification, and replace "low search volume" keywords with more common phrasings. Financial services in India have extra verification requirements.
11. Vague ads attracting the wrong people
What happens: ads without price, location or qualification attract people looking for free advice, jobs or services you don't offer.
Fix: state your price or starting price, service area and who it's for ("For registered businesses", "Minimum order ₹10,000") so unsuitable people don't click.
12. Slow or no follow-up
What happens: calls go unanswered, form leads are called the next day, and WhatsApp messages wait for hours. Google brings the lead; the sale is lost afterwards.
Fix: run ads only when someone can answer, call form leads within 5 minutes, follow up three times, and record which leads became customers so you can feed that back into Google Ads.

When the problem isn't Google Ads
- Low search demand: if few people search for your service in your area, try Meta ads to create demand. See Facebook Ads vs Google Ads.
- Pricing or trust: few reviews, no Google Business Profile or prices far above competitors.
- Sales process: leads come in but aren't converted on calls.
- Seasonality: demand dips at certain times of the year.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my Google Ads not getting leads?
The most common reasons are irrelevant searches from broad keywords, the Display Network being on, wrong location settings, a weak landing page, broken conversion tracking and slow follow-up.
Why are my Google ads not showing?
Check for disapproved ads, billing or verification problems, very low search volume keywords, bids or budgets that are too low, and ad schedule or location settings.
Why is my Google Ads cost per click so high?
Competitive keywords, low Quality Score, broad match, wide locations and generic ads all raise costs. Tighter ad groups, relevant ads and a matching landing page usually help.
How do I stop junk leads from Google Ads?
Add negative keywords like jobs, course and free, turn off the Display Network, show price and qualification in ads, and use a landing page with clear details.
What is the search terms report?
It shows the actual searches that triggered your ads. Reviewing it weekly and adding irrelevant terms as negatives is one of the most effective ways to stop wasted spend.
Should I turn off the Display Network?
For lead-generation Search campaigns, usually yes. Display can be run separately for remarketing.
What is a good CTR for Google Search ads in India?
Roughly 4% to 8% for well-targeted lead campaigns. Below 2% usually points to weak ads or irrelevant keywords.
How long should I wait before changing my campaigns?
Give changes 1 to 2 weeks to collect data, except for clear problems like irrelevant search terms, which you should fix immediately.
Are Smart campaigns bad?
Not always, but they give little control over searches and placements. Most businesses get better leads from Search campaigns in Expert mode.
Is my competitor clicking my ads?
Google filters many invalid clicks automatically and doesn't charge for them. You can check the invalid clicks column; persistent problems are more often caused by broad targeting than by competitors.
Can an agency fix my Google Ads?
A good agency can audit your account, fix settings and tracking, restructure campaigns and improve landing pages. Make sure the account stays in your name.
