Meghalaya's businesses range from the Police Bazar and Iewduh markets, service firms, schools and hotels of Shillong to the Byrnihat industrial area, cement and limestone in the Jaintia Hills, trading towns such as Tura, Jowai and Nongpoh, tourism around Sohra and Dawki, and pineapple, ginger, turmeric and areca nut farming, with most goods coming in from Guwahati and trade with Bangladesh through Dawki and Dalu. One GST registration covers your business across the State; add branches or godowns in other districts as additional places of business.
Your application is assigned either to the State's Taxation Department or to the Central GST (CBIC) administration based on your address, and the jurisdiction is printed on your registration certificate. Either way, the process is the same and fully online.

Why GST applications from Meghalaya get stuck, and how we prevent it
- AddressAddress proof doesn't matchThe house number, locality or PIN on the electricity bill or land papers differs from the application. We match them before filing.
- Land papersLand papers in someone else's nameIf the land is still recorded in a parent's or grandparent's name, add the owner's consent letter and ID. We check the papers before uploading.
- AadhaarAadhaar authentication skippedWithout it, the officer can order a site visit and approval can take up to 30 days. We complete it on day one.
- PhotosUnclear photos of the premisesOfficers often ask for a photo showing the name board and the building. We tell you exactly what to click.
- LimitWaiting for ₹40 lakhMany businesses in Meghalaya wait for the ₹40 lakh limit they read about online. Here the limit is ₹20 lakh for goods as well as services, and late registration means tax, interest and penalty on past sales.
- CodesWrong HSN/SAC or business typeChoosing the wrong codes or constitution leads to queries later. We select them based on what you actually sell.
- QueriesMissing the 7-day reply windowAn unanswered query (REG-03) leads to rejection. We reply within the deadline, with no extra fee.

What is the GST registration limit for businesses in Meghalaya?+
In Meghalaya, registration is compulsory once aggregate turnover crosses ₹20 lakh, for goods as well as for services. The ₹40 lakh limit for goods used in many States does not apply here. Which documents are needed for GST registration in Meghalaya?+
PAN and Aadhaar of the proprietor, partners or directors, a photograph, bank proof, and proof of your business address in Meghalaya: a recent MePDCL electricity bill, the municipal tax receipt in towns, or a land holding certificate from the Deputy Commissioner's office, or a certificate from the Dorbar Shnong or Nokma, with the owner's consent if the property is in a family member's name. For rented premises, add the rent agreement.
What is the GST state code for Meghalaya?+
17. Every GSTIN issued to a business registered in Meghalaya, including one in Meghalaya, starts with 17, followed by the PAN of the business.
How can I get a GST number in Meghalaya?+
Share your PAN, Aadhaar, photo, address proof and bank details with us on WhatsApp. We file Form GST REG-01 online, you confirm an Aadhaar OTP, and the department issues your 15-digit GSTIN starting with 17 and the registration certificate.
Why is the GST limit for goods ₹20 lakh in Meghalaya?+
In 2019 the GST Council let States raise the limit for suppliers of goods to ₹40 lakh. Meghalaya kept the ₹20 lakh limit, so a business here selling only goods must register once turnover crosses ₹20 lakh. The services limit is ₹20 lakh, as in most States.
Can I register GST from my home in Meghalaya?+
Yes. Your house can be the principal place of business, with an electricity bill or land papers, and a consent letter if the house is in a family member's name. Keep a small name board for any verification.
Can a small business in Meghalaya choose the composition scheme?+
Yes. In Meghalaya, traders and manufacturers with turnover up to ₹75 lakh can opt for composition and pay 1% of turnover (5% for restaurants), and service providers up to ₹50 lakh pay 6%. You can't collect GST from customers or claim input tax credit, and goods can't be sold to other States.
Is there profession tax in Meghalaya?+
Yes. Meghalaya levies Profession Tax on professions, trades, callings and employment. Businesses and professionals enrol with the State's Taxation Department, and employers deduct PT from salaries. It is separate from GST; we can help with both.
Can I sell on Amazon or Flipkart from Meghalaya without GST?+
Only within Meghalaya. Small sellers supplying goods only within their own State can sell through marketplaces with an enrolment number instead of GST below the limit. To sell to buyers in other States through Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho, you need GST registration from the first sale.
Do I need a separate GST registration for a branch in another district of Meghalaya?+
No. One GST registration covers the whole State. A shop, godown or office in another district is added as an additional place of business. You need a separate registration only for another State.
I have an office in Meghalaya and another in Guwahati. Is one GST registration enough?+
No. GST registration is State-wise. Your Meghalaya premises are registered in Meghalaya (GSTIN starting 17) and the Guwahati office needs its own Assam registration (starting 18), under the same PAN.
When are GST returns due for a business in Meghalaya?+
Monthly filers submit GSTR-1 by the 11th and GSTR-3B by the 20th of the next month. Small taxpayers under the QRMP scheme in Meghalaya file GSTR-3B by the 24th of the month after the quarter. Composition dealers file CMP-08 by the 18th after each quarter.
Do I need a trading licence along with GST in Meghalaya?+
GST doesn't need one, but non-tribal traders in Meghalaya need a trading licence from the autonomous district councils, and the municipal boards in Shillong, Tura, Jowai and other towns issue trade licences for shops. A licence is also useful supporting proof of your place of business.
How do exporters to Bangladesh through Dawki or Dalu handle GST?+
Exporters need GST registration and an Import Export Code. Goods leave through the Dawki Integrated Check Post or the Dalu land customs station without tax under an LUT, and refund of unused input tax credit can be claimed. We file the LUT along with your registration.
