Set up lead forms, click-to-WhatsApp and call ads the right way, write ads that bring enquiries, and turn more of those leads into paying customers.

Quick answer

To get leads from Facebook and Instagram ads, create a campaign with the Leads objective in Meta Ads Manager and choose where people contact you: an instant form, WhatsApp, a phone call or your website. Target your city or service area, run 3 to 5 creatives with one clear offer, add a qualifying question to the form, and call or message every lead within 5 minutes. Most Indian businesses should start with about ₹500 to ₹1,000 a day.

4 ways to get leads from Meta ads

"Leads" doesn't only mean forms. Meta can send people to four places. Choosing the right one for your business is the single biggest decision in a lead campaign.

Lead typeHow it worksCost per leadLead qualityBest for
Instant formA form opens inside Facebook or Instagram, pre-filled with name and phoneUsually lowestMixed; improves with qualifying questionsServices, education, real estate, B2B
Click-to-WhatsAppThe ad opens a WhatsApp chat with your business numberLow to mediumGood; people start a conversationLocal businesses, clinics, retail, coaching
Call adsThe ad button calls your phone directlyMediumHigh intentUrgent services, repairs, home services
Website formThe ad opens your landing page; people fill your form thereHighestUsually bestHigh-ticket services; when you have a strong landing page

Many businesses run two at once, for example an instant form plus click-to-WhatsApp, and keep whichever gives the lowest cost per customer.

Before you start: the 9-point checklist

  • A business portfolio (Business Manager) that you own, with your Facebook Page and Instagram account connected.
  • An ad account in Indian rupees (INR). The currency can't be changed later without creating a new ad account.
  • A payment method: prepaid funds via UPI or net banking are the most reliable in India.
  • Your GSTIN in billing settings so ad invoices carry it and you can claim input tax credit. No GSTIN yet? Register for GST.
  • A privacy policy page on your website. Meta requires a link to it on every instant form.
  • A WhatsApp Business number connected to your Page, if you'll run click-to-WhatsApp ads.
  • Meta Pixel and Conversions API on your website, if you'll send people to a landing page.
  • A place for leads to go: a CRM or Google Sheet, with instant notifications to your phone or email.
  • A person who replies within minutes during business hours. Without this, even the best campaign wastes money.

Step-by-step: setting up a lead campaign in Ads Manager

  1. Create a campaign in Meta Ads Manager and choose the Leads objective.
  2. Choose the conversion location: Instant forms, Messaging apps (WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram), Calls, Website, or a combination such as Instant forms and Messenger.
  3. Pick the performance goal. Start with "Maximise number of leads". Once your CRM sends lead outcomes back to Meta through the Conversions API, switch to the goal that optimises for qualified or converted leads.
  4. Set the budget. Use a daily budget of 5 to 10 times your expected cost per lead. Read our Meta ads cost in India guide to set a realistic number.
  5. Set the location. For walk-in businesses, target a radius around your shop or office (5 to 15 km). For services delivered across India, choose the states or cities you serve.
  6. Keep the audience broad. Set age and location, and let Meta's Advantage+ audience find people likely to submit. Add interests only as suggestions.
  7. Use Advantage+ placements so Meta can show your ad on Facebook, Instagram, Reels and Stories wherever leads are cheapest.
  8. Add 3 to 5 creatives: at least one vertical video (9:16) for Reels and Stories, plus square images or a carousel.
  9. Build the instant form or connect WhatsApp (details below).
  10. Send yourself a test lead before publishing, and check that it reaches your phone, email or CRM.
  11. Publish and leave it alone for 3 to 4 days. Frequent edits restart Meta's learning phase and raise costs.

How to build an instant form that brings real customers

Choose the right form type

Form typeWhat it doesUse it when
More volumeFastest form: tap, check pre-filled details, submitYou want many leads and can filter them by calling quickly
Higher intentAdds a review screen so people confirm their details before submittingYou're getting too many fake or accidental leads
Rich creativeAdds images, colours and more text to the formYour offer needs explaining (projects, courses, packages)

Write the form in 5 parts

  1. Intro: one line repeating the offer, e.g. "Get a free site visit for 2 and 3 BHK flats in Wakad".
  2. Pre-filled questions: keep to full name and phone number. Add email only if you really use it; every extra field lowers submissions.
  3. One or two qualifying questions: multiple choice works best, for example budget range, timeline or service needed. Use conditional logic to skip questions that don't apply.
  4. Privacy policy: link to your website's privacy page, and add a custom disclaimer if you'll contact people on WhatsApp.
  5. Completion screen: tell people what happens next ("Our team will call you within 10 minutes") and add a WhatsApp or Call button.

Qualifying questions that work, by industry

IndustryGood qualifying questionWhy it helps
Real estate"When are you planning to buy?" (within 3 months / 3 to 6 months / just exploring)Separates buyers from browsers
Coaching and education"Which class or exam are you preparing for?"Routes leads to the right counsellor
Clinics and dentists"What treatment are you looking for?"Lets the front desk prepare before calling
Home services"Which area do you live in?"Filters out locations you don't serve
B2B and services"What is your monthly budget?" or "How many employees?"Filters very small or very large enquiries

Click-to-WhatsApp ads: the Indian favourite

Many customers in India would rather chat than fill a form. Click-to-WhatsApp ads open a chat with your business number, with a pre-written first message.

  • Setup: connect your WhatsApp Business number to your Facebook Page, then choose Messaging apps → WhatsApp as the conversion location.
  • Pre-filled message: write the first message for the customer, e.g. "Hi, I want to know the price for a 2 BHK in Wakad".
  • Instant reply: set a greeting that answers the most common question and asks one qualifying question.
  • Quick replies: save answers for prices, location, timings and documents so your team replies in seconds.
  • Scale with the API: once chats grow beyond what one phone can handle, move to the WhatsApp Business API with a shared inbox, chatbot and CRM.

Website lead campaigns: when a landing page wins

Sending people to your website usually costs more per lead, but leads are often better because people read more before contacting you. It works best when:

  • You have a fast, mobile-first landing page for one offer, not your home page. See landing page design.
  • The Meta Pixel and Conversions API both send the "Lead" event, so Meta can optimise for submissions.
  • The page loads in under 3 seconds on mobile data and has a short form plus a WhatsApp button.
  • You add OTP verification on the form if fake numbers are a problem.

Ad creatives that bring leads

Meta decides who sees your ad largely from the creative itself, so your creative is also your targeting. What works for lead ads in India:

  • Hook in the first 2 seconds: a question or a number ("Paying more than ₹5,000 for a dental cleaning?").
  • Vertical video for Reels and Stories: real people, your shop, team or results, with captions because most people watch muted.
  • One clear offer: free consultation, demo class, site visit, first-visit discount or free quote.
  • Local proof: show the area name and familiar places so people know you're nearby.
  • Local language: Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Kannada or other languages outside metros often get cheaper leads.
  • A clear button: "Get Quote", "Book Now", "Send WhatsApp Message" or "Call Now" to match the next step.

A simple ad copy formula

Problem → Offer → Proof → Action

  1. Problem: "Struggling to find a good maths tutor for Class 10 in Baner?"
  2. Offer: "Book a free demo class this week."
  3. Proof: "Small batches of 8, experienced teachers, weekly tests."
  4. Action: "Tap 'Get Quote' and our counsellor will call you today."

Keep it short, specific and local. Test 3 to 5 versions and keep the one with the lowest cost per qualified lead.

10 ad ideas to test

  1. Before and after (where allowed by Meta's policies).
  2. Founder or doctor talking to camera for 20 seconds.
  3. "3 mistakes people make when…" short video.
  4. Price transparency: "What it really costs in 2026".
  5. Customer walkthrough or unboxing.
  6. Limited slots: "Only 10 free consultations this week".
  7. FAQ answered in 15 seconds.
  8. Carousel of packages or projects with prices.
  9. A behind-the-scenes look at your shop, clinic or site.
  10. Comparison: "Doing it yourself vs with us".

Targeting for leads in India

  • Start broad, let creatives filter. Meta's algorithm usually finds better leads with a broad audience and a specific ad than with narrow interests.
  • Location is your strongest filter. Use radius or city targeting, and choose "people living in this location" for local services.
  • Retarget warm audiences: website visitors, video viewers, people who opened your form but didn't submit, and Instagram profile visitors.
  • Lookalike audiences from your customer list help once you have a few hundred real customers.
  • Exclude existing customers and recent leads so you don't pay for the same people twice.

Lead follow-up: where most money is won or lost

A lead is only useful if you reach the person while they still remember your ad. Most leads go cold within hours.

  1. Get instant alerts. Connect your form to your CRM, Google Sheet or email so every lead notifies your team immediately. Meta's Leads Center (in Meta Business Suite) also shows leads, but only lets you download them for 90 days, so don't rely on it alone.
  2. Call within 5 minutes. Introduce yourself, mention the ad ("You asked about a free demo class on Instagram") and ask one question.
  3. WhatsApp right after the call with the price list, location pin or brochure.
  4. Follow up 3 times over 3 to 5 days if you can't reach someone: call, WhatsApp, call again.
  5. Mark every lead as contacted, qualified, converted or junk. This shows your real cost per customer and, through the Conversions API, teaches Meta which leads are good.

A 30-second first-call script

  1. "Hi [Name], this is [Your name] from [Business]. You requested [offer] on Instagram a few minutes ago."
  2. "Is this a good time for two minutes?"
  3. "Just to help you better: [qualifying question]?"
  4. "Great. The next step is [visit / demo / quote]. Would [day] at [time] work?"
  5. "I'll WhatsApp you the details and location now."

12 ways to improve lead quality

  1. Switch to the Higher intent form type if you get many accidental or fake leads.
  2. Add one qualifying multiple-choice question.
  3. Make the offer specific (price range, location, who it's for) so the wrong people skip it.
  4. Mention your price or starting price in the ad if it filters out unsuitable leads.
  5. Use a completion screen that says when you'll call, so people expect it.
  6. Call within 5 minutes; contact rates drop sharply after that.
  7. Send lead outcomes back to Meta through the Conversions API and optimise for qualified leads.
  8. Exclude locations and age groups that never convert.
  9. Turn off Audience Network if it brings low-quality leads.
  10. Use OTP verification on landing page forms.
  11. Test click-to-WhatsApp against forms; chats are often better quality.
  12. Refresh creatives every 2 to 4 weeks before costs rise.

3 example lead campaigns (how we'd set them up)

These are illustrative setups, not client results, to show how the pieces fit together.

1. Coaching institute in Pune: ₹25,000 a month

  • Lead type: instant form (higher intent) plus click-to-WhatsApp.
  • Audience: parents aged 30 to 55 within 8 km of two branches.
  • Offer: free demo class for Class 9 and 10 maths and science.
  • Form question: "Which class is your child in?" with conditional logic for the subject.
  • Creatives: a teacher explaining one tricky concept in 20 seconds, a carousel of batch timings, and a parent-style testimonial video (only with real parents' permission).
  • Follow-up: a counsellor calls within 5 minutes and books a demo slot; WhatsApp reminder the evening before.

2. Dental clinic in Nashik: ₹20,000 a month

  • Lead type: click-to-WhatsApp plus call ads during clinic hours.
  • Audience: adults within 6 km of the clinic.
  • Offer: free check-up and X-ray consultation this month.
  • WhatsApp greeting: asks which treatment they need and shares available slots.
  • Creatives: clinic walkthrough video, the dentist answering "Does root canal hurt?", and a simple offer graphic in Marathi and English.
  • Rule: no exaggerated before-and-after claims, in line with Meta's health ad policies.

3. Real estate project near Mumbai: ₹1,00,000 a month

  • Lead type: higher intent instant form plus a landing page with OTP verification for retargeting.
  • Offer: price sheet and a free weekend site visit with cab pickup.
  • Form questions: "Which configuration?" (1, 2 or 3 BHK) and "When do you plan to buy?"
  • Creatives: drone walkthrough Reel, sample flat tour, and a location map showing travel times to stations and offices.
  • Follow-up: sales team calls hot leads (buying within 3 months) first; others get a WhatsApp brochure and a call within 24 hours.
  • Note: housing ads may need Meta's special ad category, which limits some targeting.

Your weekly optimisation routine

  1. Monday: check last week's leads, contact rate and cost per qualified lead by ad.
  2. Pause the weakest ads: those with cost per qualified lead more than 1.5 times your average after enough spend.
  3. Add 1 or 2 new creatives based on the winners (same offer, new hook or format).
  4. Check frequency: above 3 to 4 a week means people are seeing the ad too often; refresh or widen the audience.
  5. Review lead notes with the sales team: which questions, areas or offers bring the best customers?
  6. Adjust budget slowly: raise by 20% to 30% at a time on campaigns that are hitting your target cost per customer.

Meta lead ads or Google Ads for leads?

Google Ads captures people already searching ("dentist near me", "GST consultant in Pune"), so leads are usually higher intent but cost more. Meta lead ads reach people before they search, so you get more leads at a lower cost but need stronger qualification and faster follow-up. Many Indian businesses get the best results by running both: Google for ready-to-buy searches and Meta for volume, WhatsApp chats and retargeting. Learn more about Google Ads management.

Common lead generation mistakes

  • Using the Traffic or Engagement objective when you want leads.
  • Asking 6 to 8 questions on the form, which cuts submissions without improving quality much.
  • Letting leads sit in Meta's Leads Center without instant alerts.
  • Calling the next day, when people have forgotten your ad.
  • Judging a campaign on cost per lead alone instead of cost per customer.
  • No privacy policy or a broken link, which gets lead forms rejected.
  • Running one creative for months until costs creep up.
  • Boosting posts for leads instead of building a proper lead campaign.

Rules to follow: privacy, consent and ad policies

  • Privacy: every instant form needs a link to your privacy policy. Use leads only for the purpose people gave them, store them securely, and delete them when no longer needed, in line with India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act.
  • Consent for WhatsApp and calls: say in the form or completion screen that your team will contact them by phone or WhatsApp.
  • Special ad categories: ads about housing, employment, credit and financial products, or social issues may need a special category, which limits targeting options.
  • Health and finance claims: avoid guaranteed results, exaggerated before-and-after claims and income promises; Meta can reject these ads or restrict your account.
  • Keep your assets yours: your Page, ad account, pixel and leads should stay in your own business portfolio, even if an agency runs the ads.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for leads: Facebook or Instagram?

Both run from the same campaign. Facebook often gives cheaper leads from a wider and older audience, Instagram reaches younger and urban audiences. Use Advantage+ placements so Meta shows your ad wherever leads are cheapest.

Are instant form leads good quality?

They are fast and cheap, but quality varies because the form is pre-filled. Add one qualifying question, use the Higher intent form type if needed, and call every lead within 5 minutes to get the best results.

How much does a lead cost on Meta ads in India?

Typical ranges are about ₹80 to ₹250 for local services, ₹150 to ₹600 for education and ₹300 to ₹1,500 or more for real estate and finance. See our full Meta ads cost in India guide for budgets and benchmarks.

How do I download leads from Facebook lead ads?

Open Meta Business Suite, go to Leads Center or the form library, and download leads as a CSV file. Leads can be downloaded for up to 90 days after submission, so connect a CRM or Google Sheet for automatic delivery.

How do I get Facebook leads into Google Sheets or my CRM automatically?

Use Meta's direct CRM integrations in Meta Business Suite, a connector tool such as Zapier, or a custom integration through Meta's API. Always send a test lead after setting it up to confirm it arrives.

Should I use instant forms or click-to-WhatsApp ads?

Test both. Instant forms usually give more leads at a lower cost, while WhatsApp chats are often better quality because the person starts a conversation. Compare them on cost per customer, not cost per lead.

Why am I getting fake or junk leads?

Common causes are the More volume form type, broad offers like "free gift", and Audience Network placements. Switch to Higher intent, add a qualifying question, make the offer specific and check your placements.

How many questions should a lead form have?

Usually name, phone number and one or two multiple-choice qualifying questions. Each extra question lowers the number of leads, so only ask what you'll use to qualify or route the lead.

How long does it take to get leads after starting ads?

Many campaigns bring the first enquiries on day one. Costs stabilise after the learning phase, usually 1 to 2 weeks, once an ad set gets about 50 leads a week.

Do I need a website to run lead ads?

No. Instant forms, click-to-WhatsApp and call ads work without a website. You still need a privacy policy page for instant forms, and a good website or landing page helps for higher-value services.

Can I run lead ads for real estate or loans in India?

Yes, but these ads may fall under Meta's special ad categories for housing or financial products, which limit targeting by age, gender and narrow location. Strong creatives and qualifying questions matter even more.

Should I hire an agency for Meta lead generation?

If you don't have time to test creatives, set up tracking and manage campaigns weekly, an agency usually pays for itself through lower cost per customer. iBACT Digital, a Meta Business Partner, manages lead campaigns from ₹7,999 a month with creatives included.
