Facebook Ads vs Google Ads: Which Is Better for Indian Small Businesses?

How the two platforms differ, what each costs in India, which works best for your industry, and how to split your budget. Includes a 2-minute quiz to find your best fit.

Quick answer

Google Ads works best when people already search for what you sell ("CA near me", "AC repair Pune", "GST registration online"): you catch demand at the moment someone is ready to buy. Facebook and Instagram ads (Meta Ads) work best when you need to create demand: reaching the right people by interest, location and behaviour with visual ads, often at a lower cost per lead. Most Indian small businesses get the best results by starting with the platform that matches how their customers buy, then adding the other once the first is profitable.

The core difference: catching demand vs creating demand

The simplest way to understand the two platforms is to think about what the customer is doing when they see your ad.

  • On Google, the customer is looking for something. They type "best dermatologist in Indiranagar" or "trademark registration fees" because they have a need right now. Your ad answers that need. This is intent-based advertising.
  • On Facebook and Instagram, the customer is scrolling: watching Reels, checking friends' posts, chatting on WhatsApp. They weren't looking for you, but Meta knows enough about their interests, life stage and location to show them an ad they're likely to care about. This is interest-based or discovery advertising.

Neither is "better" in general. Google is like having a shop on a busy market road where people come looking for your category. Meta is like a well-targeted pamphlet that reaches exactly the right homes, with a picture that makes people stop and look.

What each platform costs in India

Both platforms run on auctions, so there's no fixed price. You set a budget, and the cost per click or lead depends on competition and how good your ads are. Here are typical ranges we see for Indian businesses.

MetricMeta Ads (typical)Google Search Ads (typical)
Cost per click₹4–₹50₹10–₹150 for most local services; ₹150–₹1,000+ for loans, insurance, legal and study abroad
Cost per lead: local services₹80–₹300₹150–₹600
Cost per lead: education and coaching₹150–₹600₹300–₹1,200
Cost per lead: real estate₹300–₹1,500+₹500–₹2,500+
Cost per lead: B2B services₹300–₹1,500+₹400–₹2,000+
Sensible starting budget₹15,000–₹30,000 a month₹20,000–₹40,000 a month

Google leads often cost more, but they're frequently closer to buying. Meta leads cost less, but need faster follow-up and better qualification. That's why the right comparison is cost per customer, not cost per lead.

Both platforms charge GST on ad spend (18% for businesses in India), and you can claim it as input tax credit if your business is GST-registered.

When Google Ads is the better choice

  • People search for your service when they need it: plumbers, AC repair, pest control, CA and company registration, lawyers, clinics, car service, packers and movers.
  • The need is urgent: people search, call and decide within hours.
  • Your service is hard to show in a picture: accounting, compliance, IT services, B2B software.
  • You sell to businesses: decision-makers search for solutions on Google more than they browse Instagram for them.
  • You want phone calls: call ads and location ads on Google Maps bring direct calls.
  • You have a good landing page: Google rewards relevant, fast pages with better positions and lower costs.

When Facebook and Instagram ads are the better choice

  • People don't search for your product yet: a new product, a new brand or a new idea.
  • Your business is visual: fashion, food, interiors, real estate, salons, gyms, travel, events, jewellery.
  • You have a strong offer: a festival discount, free consultation, launch price or limited batch.
  • You want many leads at a lower cost and can follow up quickly by phone or WhatsApp.
  • You want WhatsApp conversations: click-to-WhatsApp ads start chats directly.
  • You sell online (D2C): catalogue and Advantage+ shopping campaigns are very effective.
  • You target a clear audience: parents of school-going children, new homeowners, small business owners, students in a specific city.

Three example businesses: which platform and why

These are illustrative examples based on common patterns, not specific client results.

A pest control company in Hyderabad

People search "pest control near me" or "cockroach treatment price" when they have a problem. They want to call now. Google Search and call ads are the natural starting point, backed by a strong Google Business Profile with reviews. Meta can run later with seasonal offers before the monsoon, when people plan ahead.

A home décor brand selling online

Few people search for a brand they've never heard of, but a beautiful Reel of a living room makeover stops the scroll. Meta Ads with catalogue ads, Reels and retargeting usually drive the first sales. Google Shopping and Performance Max come next, once people start searching the brand and product names.

A coaching institute in Jaipur

Students and parents search for courses ("NEET coaching Jaipur fees"), but they also respond to scholarship tests, demo classes and results posts on Instagram. Both platforms together work best: Google for course searches, Meta for demo class sign-ups and WhatsApp conversations, especially before admission season.

How to split your budget between Meta and Google

If you use both, don't split 50/50 by default. Start where your customers are most likely to buy, prove it works, then expand.

Monthly ad budgetSuggested approach
Under ₹25,000Pick one platform. Splitting a small budget means neither gets enough data to optimise.
₹25,000–₹60,000About 70% on your main platform, 30% testing the other (or retargeting).
₹60,000–₹2,00,000Run both: Google Search for high intent, Meta for reach and leads, plus retargeting on both. Shift budget monthly towards the lower cost per customer.
Above ₹2,00,000Full funnel: Meta and YouTube for awareness, Google Search and Performance Max for intent, retargeting everywhere, landing pages tested regularly.

How Meta and Google work better together

The strongest campaigns use each platform for what it does best:

  1. Meta creates interest. A Reel or carousel shows your product to people who didn't know you.
  2. Google captures the search. A few days later, some of those people search for your brand or category. Your Google ad and Google Business Profile are there.
  3. Retargeting closes the loop. People who visited your website see reminder ads on Instagram and YouTube with a testimonial or an offer.
  4. WhatsApp converts. Leads from both platforms get a quick WhatsApp reply and a call.

This is also why branded searches on Google often rise when you start Meta Ads. Track both together so you see the full picture.

Lead quality: how to improve it on each platform

On Meta

  • Use the Higher intent form type and add one qualifying question.
  • Make the offer specific ("Free site visit this Sunday", not "Contact us").
  • Call leads within 5 minutes and send a WhatsApp message straight away.
  • Send lead quality feedback to Meta through the Conversions API so it finds better people.

On Google

  • Use exact and phrase match keywords for your main services, and add negative keywords such as "free", "jobs", "course", "salary" and "DIY".
  • Send traffic to a focused landing page, not your home page.
  • Use call ads and location assets for local services.
  • Turn on enhanced conversions and import offline sales where possible.

Tracking both platforms properly

You can only compare the two if both are tracked the same way:

  • Meta: Meta Pixel plus Conversions API, and lead form integration with your CRM or Google Sheet.
  • Google: Google tag with conversion actions for forms, calls and WhatsApp clicks, plus enhanced conversions.
  • Both: UTM tags on every link, Google Analytics 4, and a simple sheet that records which leads became customers and from which platform.
  • Calls: use call tracking or a separate number per platform if phone calls are your main enquiry type.

Not sure where to start?

Tell us about your business. We'll recommend Meta, Google or both, with a budget split and expected cost per lead.

5 questions to ask before you decide

  1. Where do my best customers come from today? Referrals, Google searches, Instagram? Start where they already are.
  2. How much is one customer worth? If a customer is worth ₹50,000, a ₹1,500 lead can be very profitable; if it's worth ₹1,000, you need cheap leads.
  3. Can my team call leads within minutes? If not, Google calls (where customers call you) may suit you better than forms.
  4. Do I have photos and short videos? If yes, Meta becomes much stronger.
  5. Do I have a landing page that converts? If not, start with Meta instant forms or WhatsApp, or get a landing page before Google Ads.

A 30-day test to find your best platform

WeekWhat to do
Week 1Set up tracking on both platforms. Launch Google Search with 10–20 high-intent keywords and Meta with 3–4 creatives and one clear offer. Split the test budget 50/50.
Week 2Pause weak keywords and ads. Add negative keywords on Google. Add a qualifying question on Meta forms.
Week 3Compare cost per qualified lead. Move 20–30% of budget towards the better platform.
Week 4Compare cost per customer. Decide your main platform and use the other for retargeting or testing.

A fair test needs enough budget: about ₹20,000–₹40,000 across both platforms for the month gives you enough data to decide.

Common mistakes when choosing between Facebook and Google Ads

  • Comparing cost per click only: cheap clicks don't mean cheap customers.
  • Boosting posts instead of running proper campaigns in Ads Manager.
  • Using broad match keywords on Google without negatives, which wastes budget on irrelevant searches.
  • Sending Google traffic to the home page instead of a matching landing page.
  • Running Meta ads without video: Reels and Stories often drive the cheapest results.
  • Judging too early: both platforms need 2–4 weeks of learning.
  • Slow follow-up: a lead called after 2 days is usually lost, on any platform.
  • No tracking: without it, you're guessing which platform works.

Don't forget the free options

Paid ads work best when your free presence is strong too:

  • Google Business Profile: free listing on Google Maps and local search. With reviews and photos, it brings calls without ad spend and makes your Google Ads more effective. We can set it up.
  • Instagram and Facebook Page: regular posts and Reels build trust, so people who see your ads find an active, real business.
  • WhatsApp Business: quick replies, catalogue and labels help you convert leads from both platforms. For bigger volumes, the WhatsApp Business API adds automation and a team inbox.
  • Your website: fast, mobile-friendly pages improve results on both platforms and help you rank on Google without ads.

What about YouTube, LinkedIn and other platforms?

PlatformGood forNotes
YouTube (via Google Ads)Awareness, product demos, retargetingShort videos work well; pairs nicely with Meta Reels
LinkedIn AdsB2B, senior decision-makers, hiringPrecise job-title targeting but much higher cost per click in India
WhatsApp (via Meta)Conversations and quick conversionsClick-to-WhatsApp ads run from Meta Ads Manager
Marketplaces (Amazon, Flipkart)Products sold on those platformsSeparate ad systems; best if you already sell there

For most small businesses, Meta and Google cover 80–90% of what you need. Add others only when those two are working well.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for small businesses in India: Facebook Ads or Google Ads?

It depends on how your customers buy. If people search for your service when they need it, start with Google Ads. If your product is visual, new or offer-driven, start with Facebook and Instagram ads. Many businesses use both once one is profitable.

Are Facebook ads cheaper than Google ads in India?

Usually the cost per click and cost per lead are lower on Meta. But Google leads are often more ready to buy, so compare cost per customer, not just cost per lead.

Can I run Facebook and Google ads with a small budget?

Yes, but with under ₹25,000 a month it's better to pick one platform so it gets enough data to optimise. Add the second platform when the first is working.

Which gives better quality leads?

Google Search leads are often higher quality because the person searched for your service. Meta leads can be just as good with qualifying questions, a specific offer and fast follow-up.

Which platform is better for B2B in India?

Google Search usually works better for B2B because decision-makers search for solutions. Meta is useful for retargeting website visitors and reaching small business owners by interest.

Should I use Instagram ads or Facebook ads?

Both run from the same Meta campaign. Use Advantage+ placements so Meta shows your ads where results are cheapest, and make sure you have vertical videos for Reels and Stories.

What is Performance Max in Google Ads?

Performance Max is a Google campaign type that shows your ads across Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail and Maps using automation. It works best when conversion tracking is set up properly and you have good images and videos.

How long before I see results?

First leads often come within days on both platforms. Costs usually settle after 2–4 weeks once the platforms have enough data.

Do I need a website for Google Ads?

For Search ads you need a landing page, and a fast, relevant page improves results. Meta can work without a website using instant forms and click-to-WhatsApp ads.

Is GST charged on Facebook and Google ad spend?

Yes. Ad spend on both platforms attracts 18% GST for businesses in India. If your business is GST-registered and you add your GSTIN to the ad account, you can usually claim it as input tax credit.

Can one agency manage both Meta and Google Ads?

Yes, and it helps, because one team can compare results across both and move budget to what works. iBACT Digital manages both with plans from ₹7,999 a month each.

What about YouTube ads?

YouTube ads run through Google Ads. They're useful for awareness and retargeting, especially with short videos, and work well alongside Meta Reels.
