Meta Pixel & Conversions API Setup: Step-by-Step for WordPress and Shopify

What the Meta Pixel and Conversions API do, why you need both, and how to set them up on WordPress, WooCommerce and Shopify, then test that every lead, call, WhatsApp click and purchase is tracked correctly.

Quick answer

The Meta Pixel is a small piece of code on your website that tells Meta when someone views a page, submits a form or buys. The Conversions API (CAPI) sends the same events from your server, so they're still counted when browsers block tracking. Use both, with matching event IDs so Meta doesn't count anything twice. On WordPress, use Meta's official plugin or Google Tag Manager; on WooCommerce, Meta's official WooCommerce plugin; on Shopify, the Facebook & Instagram app with maximum data sharing. Then verify your domain and test every event in Events Manager.

Meta Pixel vs Conversions API: what each does

Meta PixelConversions API
Where it runsIn the visitor's browserOn your server or platform
What it sendsPage views, clicks, form submits, purchasesThe same events, plus offline events such as qualified leads
WeaknessBlocked by ad blockers, some browsers and privacy settingsNeeds a plugin, app or developer to set up
StrengthEasy to install; powers retargeting audiencesMore reliable; better matching of customers

Use both. Meta recommends the Pixel plus the Conversions API, sending the same event with the same event ID from both, so Meta keeps one copy (this is called deduplication).

Why tracking matters so much for your ads

  • Better optimisation: Meta learns which people become leads or buyers and finds more like them.
  • Lower costs: campaigns optimised for real conversions usually get cheaper leads than those optimised for clicks.
  • Retargeting: show ads to people who visited your pricing page or added to cart.
  • Honest reporting: see cost per lead and return on ad spend, not guesses.
  • Lead quality signals: with CAPI you can send back which leads became customers.

Broken tracking is one of the most common reasons ads underperform. See why Facebook ads are not working.

Setup chooser: which method should you use?

Select your platform to see the recommended setup.

Before you start

  1. A Meta business portfolio (Business Manager) that owns your ad account. Don't create the Pixel in an agency's or employee's portfolio.
  2. Create a dataset (Pixel) in Events Manager: Connect data sources → Web → name it after your business.
  3. Admin access to your website (WordPress admin or Shopify owner/staff with app permissions).
  4. An updated privacy policy that explains you use cookies and share data with advertising partners, plus consent where required under India's data protection law.

Setup on WordPress (service and lead websites)

Option A: Meta's official WordPress plugin (simplest)

  1. In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New and search for "Meta pixel for WordPress" (by Meta).
  2. Install and activate it, then open its settings.
  3. Click Get started and log in with the Facebook profile that has admin access to your business portfolio.
  4. Select your business portfolio and Pixel/dataset, and turn on automatic advanced matching and Conversions API when offered.
  5. Finish and check that PageView events arrive in Events Manager.

Option B: Google Tag Manager (more control)

  1. Install Google Tag Manager on your site (with a plugin or your theme's header settings).
  2. Add the Meta Pixel base code as a tag that fires on all pages.
  3. Create tags for Lead (form submission or thank-you page), Contact (clicks on tel: and wa.me links) and Schedule if you take bookings.
  4. For the Conversions API, use Meta's Conversions API Gateway (set up from Events Manager with a hosting option) or server-side Tag Manager.
  5. Publish the container and test.

Tracking form leads on WordPress

  • Best: send visitors to a thank-you page after the form, and fire the Lead event only on that page.
  • Alternative: fire Lead on the form plugin's success event (Elementor, Contact Form 7 and WPForms all have one) using Tag Manager.
  • Track WhatsApp and call buttons as Contact events, because many Indian customers prefer them to forms.

Setup on WooCommerce

  1. Install Meta's official Facebook for WooCommerce plugin (it may appear as "Meta for WooCommerce").
  2. Connect it to your business portfolio, Facebook Page, ad account and Pixel.
  3. Turn on the Conversions API and advanced matching in the plugin settings.
  4. Optionally sync your product catalogue for catalogue ads and Instagram shopping features.
  5. Place a test order (or use a 100% discount coupon) and check Purchase with the right value in INR.

Avoid running two Pixel plugins at once (for example, the WooCommerce plugin plus another pixel plugin), as this causes double counting.

Setup on Shopify

  1. In Shopify admin, add the Facebook & Instagram app (by Meta) from the Shopify App Store or Sales channels.
  2. Click Start setup and connect your Facebook account, business portfolio, Page, Instagram account and ad account.
  3. Connect or create your Pixel (dataset).
  4. Under Customer data-sharing, choose Maximum. This turns on the Conversions API alongside the Pixel.
  5. Accept the terms and finish setup. Your catalogue can sync automatically.
  6. Remove any old Pixel code from your theme or other apps to avoid duplicates.
  7. Place a test order and check events in Events Manager.

Want it set up correctly the first time?

We set up the Pixel, Conversions API, domain verification and event testing as part of our Meta Ads management.

Verify your domain

  1. Open Business Settings → Brand safety → Domains in Meta Business Suite.
  2. Add your domain (for example, yourbusiness.in).
  3. Verify using a DNS TXT record (recommended), a meta-tag in your site's header, or an HTML file upload.
  4. Wait for the status to show Verified.

Domain verification proves you own the website, protects your link previews and helps with event configuration.

How to test that everything works

  1. Events Manager → your dataset → Test events: enter your website URL, open it, and perform each action (view a page, submit a form, click WhatsApp, buy). Each event should appear within seconds.
  2. Check that events show both "Browser" and "Server" as sources, with deduplication working (no double counts).
  3. Install the Meta Pixel Helper Chrome extension to see which events fire on each page.
  4. Look at Event Match Quality in Events Manager. Higher scores mean Meta can match more events to real people (send email and phone where you have consent, which plugins usually hash automatically).
  5. After 24–48 hours, check the Overview tab for errors or warnings.

Using your tracking in campaigns

  • Choose the Leads or Sales objective and set the conversion event to Lead or Purchase.
  • Create custom audiences: visitors to service pages, people who started checkout, past leads.
  • Build lookalike audiences from purchasers or qualified leads where allowed for your ad category.
  • Use custom conversions for specific thank-you pages (for example, one per service).
  • Send offline or CRM events (qualified lead, sale) through the Conversions API, so Meta optimises for real customers.

Privacy and consent in India

  • Explain tracking in your privacy policy: what data you collect, why, and that it's shared with advertising partners such as Meta.
  • India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act sets rules for consent and notice; show a clear notice and get consent where required.
  • Don't send sensitive information (health conditions, financial details) as event parameters.
  • Plugins and Shopify's app hash customer details before sending them to Meta.

This is general information, not legal advice. Speak to a legal professional for your specific case.

No website? You can still track

  • Instant lead forms: leads are tracked inside Meta automatically.
  • Click-to-WhatsApp ads: conversations started are tracked automatically; on the WhatsApp Business API you can send purchase and lead events back. See the click-to-WhatsApp guide.
  • CRM integration: send "qualified" and "won" stages back to Meta through the Conversions API for better optimisation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Meta Pixel?

It's a small piece of code on your website that tells Meta when visitors view pages, submit forms or buy, so you can measure results, retarget visitors and optimise ads for conversions.

What is the Conversions API?

The Conversions API sends website and offline events to Meta from your server or platform instead of the browser, so events are still counted when browsers or ad blockers stop the Pixel.

Do I need both the Pixel and the Conversions API?

Yes, Meta recommends using both together with matching event IDs, so events are counted reliably and duplicates are removed.

How do I add the Meta Pixel to WordPress?

Install Meta's official "Meta pixel for WordPress" plugin and connect it to your business portfolio, or add the Pixel through Google Tag Manager. For WooCommerce stores, use the official Facebook for WooCommerce plugin.

How do I set up the Conversions API on Shopify?

Install the Facebook & Instagram app by Meta, connect your accounts and Pixel, and set Customer data-sharing to Maximum. This turns on the Conversions API.

How do I track Elementor form submissions?

Redirect the form to a thank-you page and fire the Lead event there, or use Google Tag Manager to fire Lead on Elementor's form success event.

How do I track WhatsApp button clicks?

Set up a Contact event that fires when someone clicks a wa.me or WhatsApp link, using Google Tag Manager or your tracking plugin.

Why are my Pixel events showing twice?

Usually two integrations are sending the same event without matching event IDs. Keep one integration per platform and make sure browser and server events share the same event ID.

What is Event Match Quality?

It's a score in Events Manager showing how well your server events can be matched to Meta accounts. Sending hashed email and phone with consent usually improves it.

Do I need to verify my domain?

Yes, it's recommended. Domain verification proves you own the website and helps with link control and event settings in Meta.

Is Meta Pixel tracking legal in India?

Yes, with a clear privacy notice and consent where required under India's data protection law. Don't send sensitive personal information as event data.

Can iBACT Digital set up my Pixel and Conversions API?

Yes. It's included in our Meta Ads management plans from ₹7,999 a month plus GST, and everything is set up in your own business portfolio.
